A young American soldier disappeared from the military base where she worked. The prime suspect committed suicide when he was surrounded by police and will, according to the prosecution, have confessed to a friend the murder of her colleague.
Vanessa Guillen, 20, was last seen on April 22 at the Fort Hood military base, Texas, USA, where she worked. A soldier of the same rank and age, Aaron David Robinson, was singled out as the main suspect in the disappearance. But according to the BBC, which quotes local authorities, he committed suicide with his own gun when police surrounded him outside the station last Tuesday.
The victim’s family alleges that Vanessa was being harassed by someone inside the unit, but the military chiefs assure that they have not received any reports indicating that the young woman would be the target of sexual harassment or other abuse.
Prosecutors in charge of the case believe that before he killed himself, the suspect confessed to the abduction and murder of the young woman to a friend, Cecily Aguilar. It is said that the young man admitted killing his colleague with a hammer in a room at the military base (where all the victim’s belongings were found), and taking the body to a remote location.
According to the indictment, 22-year-old Cecily helped the suspect to get rid of the body, dismembering it “with a large knife” and burying the remains in three holes, which then just filled with concrete. Remains were however found, 48 kilometers from the military base, lacking official confirmation of identity, which the posthumous examinations should confirm.
The alleged accomplice of the crimes is in custody, and may, if convicted, face a sentence of up to 20 years in prison, for the crime of desecration of the corpse.
